Red-Banded Hairstreak

August 2020

The Red-Banded Hairstreak (Calycopis cecrops) is one of our most common hairstreaks and is easy to identify using its obvious bold red-orange band with white at the outer edge which extends across the hindwing and forewing. The base color is brownish-gray and you can sometimes see the blue dorsal side as the butterflies rub their hindwings together. They can be found in shaded areas, meadows, and on garden flowers as well.
