Pipevine Swallowtail

August 2026

The Pipevine Swallowtail (Battus philenor) is a large, mostly black butterfly with shimmering iridescent blue hindwings. Depending on angle of view, the blue coloration can appear more or less prominent and most individuals have white spots and crescents on the dorsal side hindwings as well. The underside hindwing is vibrant blue from the center to the edge including the tails, and has bold orange spots edged with white and black. Note that the abdomen is also blue with white spots, and the thorax is spotted almost like a Monarch.
