Northern Pearly-Eye

July 2021

The Northern Pearly-Eye (Enodia anthedon) is our largest lightly-colored satyr here in New Jersey and has the most prominent hindwing eyespots, and boldest striping pattern. Note also the incredible gold edging on the eyespots and along the full outer portion of the ventral side forewing and hindwing. There is a swirling white-lilac pattern around the eyespots and a slight scalloped look to the hindwing.

I most often find Northern Pearly-Eyes in shaded patches of forest where they’ll make short flights from the ground to tree trunks or low leaves and grasses. This is another species that loves to puddle on dirt trails. I’m still waiting for one to land on me!!

This Northern Pearly-Eye really treated me to some amazing poses.  The image is a nice depiction of habitat where I usually observe these satyrs.  They seem to prefer shady forests with grasses like the one it chose as a perch, near dirt paths where they can puddle on minerals from the dirt, or feed close to the ground on sap from trees.

Here’s something I’ve rarely seen - the dorsal side of a Northern Pearly-Eye as it basks in the sun. The details are incredible - there are many black spots with yellow outlines and a cool flamelike brown and tan detail near the center of the forewing.

This is the same individual from the dorsal view photo. You can compare the ventral side details go see which match up.

In addition to leaves and grasses, Northern Pearly-Eyes will also perch on tree trunks. This one landed at an angle, but sometimes they will perch facing downward or even upside-down!!
