Little Yellow

Male - August 2024

The Little Yellow (Eurema lisa) is our smallest sulphur species in New Jersey. They have rounded wings different from Orange or Clouded Sulphurs, and are much smaller than Sleepy Oranges. Males are bold bright yellow with a variable rust-colored spot on the outer hindwing. There is a silvery-white line around the wing edges and a cool bronzy fringe. Females are a bit lighter pale yellow and have more brown markings on the wings overall.

Males puddling - August 2026

Little Yellows are not residents in the state, but will form temporary colonies near their host plant Partridge Pea. This particular colony has persisted for several years with numbers ranging from a few to more than thirty appearing at a time. I will most often find larger numbers in puddling groups near damp soil and sandy areas, especially where nectar sources are close by.
