Little Wood-Satyr

June 2025

The Little Wood Satyr (Megisto cymela) is a small tan satyr with 2 prominent black eyespots on each wing. These spots are surrounded by yellow and brown rings and usually have a bit of blue at the center. There are also many variable spots/marks in blue or shimmery silver near these main spots, and 2 brown lines crossing the wings on the ventral side.

There are 2 lines near the wing fringe that pretty much trace the curve of the forewing and hindwing and are visible from both the dorsal and ventral sides.

It was pretty cool to check out the front view of this Little Wood-Satyr as it rested on the leaf.

It’s actually quite fun to try to chase these guys along the meadow edges hoping they’ll land amid the grasses or leaves.  Finding the right angle for a photo can be a challenge but makes this species a joy.
