The Harvester (Feniseca tarquinius) is a copper-colored butterfly with beautiful white-edged markings that look like water droplets. This species is extremely unique in New Jersey and can be found near American Beech trees close to streams or other water sources. Their caterpillars feed on Wooly Aphids so look for large groups of the fluffy insects on the trees. Harvesters are the only carnivorous butterfly in North America. Males will often chase around the trees and leaf perches to defend their territory. Females can be found laying eggs near the Aphids. They are rarely seen with wings open but have a beautiful orange design with black markings and bold wing margins.
