Eyed Brown

June 2023

The Eyed Brown (Satyrodes eurydice) is a rare small pale brown satyr exhibiting black eyespots which are encircled by yellow and brown rings, and have a bluish white dot at the center. The lines on the ventral side wings are mostly jagged, with the inner line closest to the body having an inward pointing spike closest to the hindwing leading edge.  This is helpful to differentiate from the very similar Appalachian Brown which has smoother more curved lines and no inward pointing spike.  I’ve also noticed the area between the outer line and the eyespots is a bit lighter on Appalachians and contrasts more with the rest of the wing.
