European Skipper

June 2025

The European Skipper (hymelicus lineola) is a tiny light orange-peach colored grass skipper with a paler ventral side hindwing, contrasting with a pastel orange forewing. From above they are almost uniform bright orange with thin brown wing veins, and very narrow dark brown margins edging against the light fringe. The antennae are very short and more rounded as compared with the curved tips of our other grass skippers. They usually make soft, bouncy, short flights in the middle of meadows and I often find them feeding on Vetch flowers. Least skippers are somewhat similar but have more rounded wings and a more uniform, bolder orange color on the ventral side wings.
