Question Mark

Male Dark Form - May 2026

The Question Mark (Polygonia interrogationis) is a medium-sized butterfly with bright warm orange forewings with 3 dots and one dash in a line near the middle on the dorsal side. The underside is variable ranging from a mottled combo of brown and tan with purple, or a bit plainer and more uniform tan or bronze. Note the namesake “?” symbol that appears near the center of the ventral side hindwing on all forms.

Two Question Marks once landed on this window screen and I had to lean up against the house (likely in a comical pose) to get a nice ventral view. It was really cool to see this butterfly right in the yard.
