Brazilian Skipper
Female - August 2018
The Brazilian Skipper (alpodes ethlius) is our largest New Jersey grass skipper and is a very rare immigrant to the state. They have warm gold-brown wings when viewed from the ventral side, with bold white dots on both the hindwing and forewing. Their thorax looks very sturdy and the abdomen is quite large. Forewings are quite long, almost reminiscent of a very large Ocola Skipper. From above they have similar large white spotting details. They mainly appear in southern NJ, but have made their way up north certain years. Look for them near large patches of Canna Lilies which are their caterpillar food plant.

Eggs on Canna Lily leaf - August 2018
The female pictured was constantly laying eggs on the Canna Lily leaves this day in mid-August. She would deposit a small group at times or even just one egg in all different spots on the plants.
