Banded Hairstreak

July 2022

The Banded Hairstreak (Satyrium calanus) is a very small brownish-gray hairstreak, fairly common near woodland edges with oak or hickory trees, or in nearby meadows. The forewing and hindwing both have bands of parallel and semicircular white and dark markings with the outer white portion sometimes being more prominent. These markings are usually about the same size as you scan from the lower forewing to the leading edge in comparison with the similar rare Hickory Hairstreak which has markings that obviously increase in size. The hindwing bands are aligned on Hickory but not on Banded. The blue semi-oval at the hindwing edge usually only extends inward about the same distance as the orange portion, where Hickory has a longer blue marking.
