American Snout

Dark Form - July 2025

The American Snout (Libytheana carinenta) is the only Snout Species in New Jersey and is easily identifiable by the extended palps. The hindwing color is variable on the ventral side with some individuals having very bold dark markings, others with an intermediated speckled look, and still others with plain solid wings. The inner ventral side forewing shows bold orange, white striping and a dark brown base.

Plain Form - July 2025

These butterflies are quite small, but females are noticeably larger when you see both sexes together. They will often puddle, so look for them around damp patches of sand. However, sometimes they will perch on leaves or even fly way up near the tops of the trees. It’s always a joy to find one but I personally don’t see them every year.

Intermediate Form - July 2025

I was lucky enough to observe three different forms puddling together in 2025 - with the Snouts sporadically returning to this sandy area. There were a few of each with 9 total individuals ranging from fresh to worn. You can see how this butterfly has similar shaped markings to the one in the profile image, but they are a bit more muted or desaturated in appearance.
